Tokyo has been a popular tourist destination for many travelers. There are tons of things to do and places to see and these could get a bit pricey. However, traveling to Tokyo doesn’t have to be expensive. Here’s a list of free things to do in Tokyo:

1. Visit the Senso-ji
The Senso-ji is a Buddhist Temple located in Asakusa. It is considered as the oldest temple in Tokyo.
2. Wake up early and watch the Tsukiji market auction
Tsukiji Market is famous for its tuna auctions, fish markets and restaurants. Only 120 visitors per day get to see the auction.
3. Walk through the Takeshita Dori in Harajuku
Takeshita Dori is a pedestrian street located in Harajuku. There are tons of cool fashion shops and cafes in this street. A great place to find fashion inspiration.
4. Cross the busy Shibuya Pedestrian Scramble
The Shibuya Pedestrian Scramble is a famous landmark. It is known as the busiest pedestrian crossing in the world. Many visitors have this on their bucket list of things to do in Tokyo.
5. Take a break in Yoyogi Park
Yoyogi Park is located near the Harajuku station. It’s a wonderful place to relax.
6. Visit the Meiji Shrine
The Meiji Shrine is a shrine dedicated to Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken. This shrine is open all year round.
7. Check out the Rainbow Bridge at night
The Rainbow Bridge is a bridge that connects the Shibaura Pier and Odaiba waterfront. At night, the bridge lights up looking like a rainbow.
8. Window shopping in Roppongi Hills
Roppongi Hills is an urban center with shops, restaurants, cafes, etc.
9. Stroll around Akihabara
Akihabara is known as the ‘Electric Town’. A popular place to find mangas, animes and computer games.
10. See panoramic views of Tokyo from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building Observation Deck
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building has an observation deck for visitors to see panoramic views of Tokyo for free.
During my visit to Tokyo, I stayed at the Shibuya Tokyu REI hotel and it was the perfect location, only a 2 minute walk to the Shibuya station and a few minutes away from the Shibuya scramble. Also, it was budget friendly (about $100 USD per night). Definitely a great location to stay.
