Life in a day: Alfama Lisbon February 2013

Beautiful day in the Alfama neighborhood

Alfama is considered to be the oldest district in Lisbon, Portugal. This neighborhood still has most of its historical structures. And a very beautiful view of the city can be seen through the top of the slopes.

It was such a beautiful weather when I visited Lisbon, and since it was a Saturday I went to see the Feira da Ladra, the Flea Market. This market is located in Campo de Santa Clara near the Santa Engracia Church.

Things they sell at the market – household goods, music instruments and other things.

A very cute little shop near the flea market which sells women’s accessories and apparel.

I ended up getting 3 items from the flea market – 2 hand painted small plates and a small wooden rooster display. From what I have heard you can bargain but since I didn’t speak Portuguese, I just ended up paying the full price which was 7 euros for all 3 items. I actually thought it was a pretty good deal, I didn’t want to stress out too much by bargaining to 5 euros lol.

Lunch at the Cheiro ao Sabor

After the flea market adventure, I went for lunch at the Cheiro ao Sabor (I don’t remember exactly where this is located but its in one of the main restaurant streets). They had an awesome bolo de chocolate! I would definitely go back there just for the chocolate cake.

City Sightseeing Portugal bus tour

While I wanted to try living like a local in Alfama, Lisbon, I also wanted to see and learn about their history the most relaxing way – by taking the CitySightseeing Tour bus. There were 2 routes for this bus red and blue, the first day I took the red and it had 23 stops. The price was 18 euros for 2 days. Although there were also other tour buses in the city, I chose this one because I’ve taken them before in Helsinki, Finland. But I think it didn’t really matter if you chose the other tour company as well since they pretty much go to the same locations.

So that sums up one of my Saturdays in Lisbon on February 2013. Have you been to Lisbon? What exciting things have you done there when you visited?
