The Heidelberg castle is one of the most famous ruins in Germany.  It is located on a hill 300 feet above the city.  That being said, it is an outstanding landmark in Heidelberg.  The first documented mention of the castle was in the early 1200’s and through out the years – fires, wars, lightening has destroyed some of its parts.

To get to the castle, there is a small train (Bergbahnen) that takes you up to the castle.  It cost around 6 Euros.  The entry is free to visit the outside castle.  However, there are admission fees for the courtyard, giant barrel, apothecary museum and guided tours.
